Margate Mutual Benevolent Association Local 41 presented six $1,000 O’Hara-McCormick scholarships during the Board of Commissioners meeting Thursday, June 7. Margate firefighter and FMBA President Brian Duffey and Secretary Perry Coker presented the awards.

“We get to see the best of what Margate has to offer with our young people going off to college,” Duffey said. “These guys are our future and they are awesome.”

The FMBA started the scholarship program many years ago by offering one or two $500 scholarships, Duffey said.

“But through the generosity of Margate residents donating to our fund drive, the FMBA has been able to increase the number of scholarships and the amount,” Duffey said.

A total of six, $1,000 scholarships were awarded for Margate students to start their college careers.

The recipients are:

  •  Sam LaMonica, a graduate of Holy Spirit High School who will attend St. Joseph University in Philadelphia majoring in finance
  •  Hailey Stack, a graduate of Ocean City High School who will attend The College of New Jersey majoring in criminology
  •  Madelyn Canuso, a graduate of OCHS who will attend Villanova University majoring in chemical engineering
