MARGATE – The Eugene A. Tighe Middle School sent 41 students off to the next phase in their educational careers at promotion exercise held at the Dominick A. Potena Performing Arts Center Tuesday, June 19.
It was the final commencement ceremony for Superintendent John DiNicola, who retired this year after serving as principal in all three of the district’s public schools over the last 18 years, including for one month at Tighe School before being named superintendent of the district four years ago.
He recognized the students for “maintaining a standard of excellence rarely seen in a middle school,” which resulted in the school being designated a national Blue Ribbon School earlier this year.
“I’m so glad I waited for them to graduate before retiring,” he said.
Principal Audrey Becker, who became the students’ principal when they were entering fifth grade, said the members of the Class of 2018 became “more refined, unique and talented,” over the last four years, and possess “such outstanding character that they are truly remarkable.”
People come into our lives for a reason, Becker said. “Just remember, because I know you I have been changed for good.”
Mayor Michael Becker advised students to make their parents proud, be proud to be a Tighe School Titan and, “I hope you always have a little sand in your shoes.”
The welcoming address was given by Sydney Drexler, who will be attending Holy Spirit High School in September.
She thanked the teachers, staff, families for helping them build “a solid foundation on which to learn” and her fellow classmates for “creating memories that will carry us through.”
“You have within you the strength, patience and passion to reach for the stars and change the world,” she said. “So, whether you are going to be a Viking, a Red Raider, a Hermit, a Spartan, a Red Hawk, a Brave or a Mustang, always remember that first you were a Titan.”
