MARGATE – The Fire Department is reaching out to the public during two events being held next week.

The department will hold its annual fire prevention program 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 28 behind the Margate Public Library, 8100 Atlantic Ave. The event is geared toward educating the city’s youngsters about how to protect themselves in the event of a fire. Firefighters will demonstrate Stop, Drop and Roll, how to crawl under smoke and don fire gear to let children know firefighters are their friend. Firefighters will distribute literature and provide giveaways. Children will have the opportunity to climb aboard fire apparatus and get their turn at squirting a fire hose. Hot dogs and soft drinks will be provided.

On Friday, June 29, the department will hold a Wellness Day at Fire Station 1, Ventnor and Washington avenues. The event includes music by Tracy Jones, mammograms on demand or by appointment at the AMI mobile unit, stem cell donor match, skin cancer screenings and massages by therapist Douglas Garcia. Refreshments will be served. T-shirts will be available for purchase with proceeds benefitting a local organization to be determined, according to firefighter Danyl Loyle. Other organizations on site include Jewish Family Service, Gilda’s Club, South Jersey Cancer fund and the Dean Randazzo Cancer Fund.

The event, which will be held from 9 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., is being sponsored by the Margate Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association Local 41 and local businesses.
