Downbeach Express, Margate bridge and causeway.

The Margate Bridge Company will be starting repair and maintenance work on bridge mechanical equipment at the movable bridge over Beach Thorofare for two weeks in September.

The work is being done after Labor Day and through the evening hours when traffic volumes are lower than during the busy summer days. It is expected to be completed in two weeks, weather permitting, according to a release.

This work will require the bridge and causeway to be closed to vehicular traffic from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, Sept. 16-20, then again the following week, Sunday through Thursday, Sept. 23-27.

The work will include removal and replacement of aged mechanical and structural parts including bearing and gears, bearing pads and minor steel members.

The company will observe applicable standards for traffic safety by blocking the roadway in each direction and provide message boards to alert motorists, who are encouraged to seek other routes during the closure periods.

At 6 a.m. each morning, the roadway will be cleared of all road barriers and construction equipment and materials so normal two-lane traffic may resume. No work will occur from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. so normal traffic patterns will prevail.

There will be no interruption to boat traffic in the channel during this work.
