Work will resume on Margate’s drainage system installation Monday, Sept. 10.
PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Army Corps Engineers Philadelphia District announced today that construction will resume on the stormwater management system in Margate.
The Army Corps and its contractors, Weeks Marine, Inc. and Walters Marine Construction, will resume work Monday, Sept. 10 on the third segment of the overall system near Kenyon Avenue, and adjacent blocks to the north and south, according to a release.
The Army Corps worked with the city and the NJ Department of Environmental Protection to design a permanent stormwater management system. The system will collect rainfall runoff from beach blocks between Fredericksburg Avenue and Vendome Avenues. It features collection inlets near each street end bulkhead, tied together with a lateral manifold system carrying the stormwater to the ocean through five outfall pipes. This type of system is commonplace among New Jersey oceanfront communities.
The Army Corps and its contractor previously completed two of the five ocean outfall segments at Vendome and Nassau avenues before stopping work for the summer. Work will resume on the third segment at Kenyon and then progress north to Franklin and Douglas avenues.
Equipment mobilization will begin on Monday and last approximately one week. The next activity will be the delivery and storing of the material, including the pipes, piles, and concrete junction boxes, to last approximately two weeks. The excavation and placement of the first system should begin during the last week of September or the first week of October. All work will be completed by April 2019.
Citizens can expect to see multiple crews from Walters Marine. working on the seaward side of the bulkheads working from south to the north. Work is initially scheduled to take place Monday through Friday during daylight hours.
