Members of the Margate City Fire Department spent Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 7-13 visiting toddlers, children, adults and senior citizens to share the message that everyone can work to prevent fires and be well-prepared if fire strikes.
After visiting the Eugene A. Tighe Middle School and the William H. Ross Elementary School, the department visited the JCC, Margate Community Church, and Playgroups Plus. They also visited senior citizens at the Bloom Pavilion.
The session originally scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 11 at Playgroups Plus had to be rescheduled because of the rain.
The 2018 theme for the National Fire Protection Association’s annual reach out campaign is “Look. Listen. Learn: Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere.”
Children and adults learned how to look for places fire could start and identify potential fire hazards so they can take care of them before tragedy strikes.
Listen for the sound of the smoke alarm because you only have minutes to escape to safety once the alarm sounds. Then, go to your agreed upon meeting place. And, learn two ways out of every room, including windows and doors that lead outside.
Children also had the opportunity to see the department’s fire apparatus, squirt a fire hose, try on firefighting gear and practice drills that can save a life, such as stop, drop and roll, and how to crawl under smoke.
