Alex Cadavid shares the culture of Columbia during the VECC Multicultural Fair, Tuesday, Nov. 20.

VENTNOR – The Ventnor Educational Community Complex held its annual Multicultural Fair Tuesday, Nov. 20. There were 87 participants sharing the cultures of 22 different countries around the world. Some of the presentations reflected the cultural heritage of the students, who shared costumes, culture and culinary dishes.

“The students volunteered their time after school starting in September to work on their projects,” said eighth grade teacher Debbie Duff, who coordinated the event with seventh grade special education teacher Lori Henry.

Duff said the projects were not graded, but some teachers offered extra credit for the projects.

“They worked so hard on these projects. Generally, they reflect their heritage, but some of the eighth graders who participated in prior years decided to chose a different country,” Duff said.

She said she was pleased to see the students so engrossed in their projects. Some picked their favorite dishes to share with visitors, which included parents, siblings and classmates.

“It’s a totally student driven event,” Henry said.

Eighth grader Kaila Jordan was the winner of the T-shirt decorating contest. Every participant received a T-shirt. Kayila’s theme for her design was, “We bring people and culture together.”

Students also shared what they will be eating on Thanksgiving. Instead of the traditional American turkey dinner, some students will be enjoying ethnic foods cooked by their parents and grandparents.
