MAYS LANDING – U.S. Representative Frank A. LoBiondo (NJ-02) recently announced a three-student team from Egg Harbor Township High School won the 2018 Congressional App Challenge. Their submission, “Flashcards with Friends,” is a mobile application designed to help students quiz themselves in preparation for school exams.

The app was created by Leo Shao, Alex Cohen and Vicky Zheng.

“Congratulations to Leo, Vicky and Alex for their innovative and educational app. It is clear they were looking to assist their fellow students in preparing for exams now and in the future. I was impressed by the substantial thought and execution displayed in this app,” LoBiondo said.  “I applaud all of the students who participated in this year’s Congressional App Challenge and encourage you and your classmates to continue creating forward-looking technology.”

Judges who reviewed 2nd Congressional district submissions included Holly Cyrus, a project manager at the FAA Technical Center; Nancy Hudanich, superintendent of the Cape May County Technical School District; and Peter D’Amico, a computer engineer at the FAA Technical Center.

The Congressional App Challenge is a nationwide competition aimed at encouraging middle and high school students to learn how to code by creating their own applications for mobile devices. The Challenge seeks to highlight the value of computer science and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education while spurring friendly competition between competing teams.

Thirty-six teams comprised of 106 students across South Jersey competed in the fifth annual challenge hosted by LoBiondo.
