Installing one of these sturdy benches on Margate’s dune crossovers is a great way to honor or memorialize a loved one.

MARGATE – The city has come up with a way for residents to honor a loved one with the installation of a park bench on the dune crossovers throughout the city.

Sponsorships are available for the city-owned benches that can be installed on a 10- by 10-foot fenced area at 34 dune crossovers. The sponsorship fee is $1,000 and includes the cost of installing the plaque and maintaining them over the next 10 years.

According to Anthony Edge of the Public Works Department, the benches are made from long-lasting, durable and maintenance-free recycled plastic designed to resist moisture and include a weather-resistant plaque that allows three lines of text with 20 characters per line.

“They will be guaranteed for 10 years,” he said. “The plaques are really nice and are made of cast aluminum. The benches have black struts and cedar-colored seats and backs.”

The benches are sturdy enough to be left out during a storm, Edge said.

The city has received seven deposits so far and sponsorships for other locations are available on a first-come, first-served basis, he said.

Residents may request the bench installation on a street of their choice, if it is still available, he said. Only one bench per crossover.

The benches take about six weeks to order and install. The plaques will be made by Schoppy’s Trophies in Linwood.
