VENTNOR – The Ventnor Board of Commissioners took actions on several items during its April 25 meeting, including granting two hardship waivers for street opening permits on a street that is still under a moratorium period for street openings and another where the moratorium will expire in September.
Municipalities place five-year moratoriums after streets are paved to prevent damage to newly paved streets. In Ventnor, if a street opening permit is issued, the beneficiary is required to pave curb to curg.
The first waiver was granted to a family that had a fire at their house and is rebuilding, and the second was granted to a developer building a new home where the water and sewer service is covered by concrete and made of galvanized pipe not suitable for a new home.
Firefighter who pleaded guilty in prescription fraud case resigns
The board accepted the resignation of firefighter Edward Sutor Jr., effective April 12, the day he pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiring to defraud the NJ State Health Benefits Program out of more than $2.5 million paid for fraudulently scripted compound drugs. Sutor was the 24th person to plead guilty in the massive compounded drug fraud scheme.
City to auction bicycles, vehicles
The board agreed to auction to the highest bidder on GovDeals.com a collection of 18 confiscated bicycles to be sold in one lot, along with a men’s single-speed road bike.
The board also agreed to hold an abandoned vehicle auction 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 14 at Ventnor City Hall, 6201 Atlantic Ave.
City hires special law enforcement officer
The board hired Jeffrey Woodson to serve as a full-time Class II officer starting April 22 at a rate of $15.50 per hour.
Mayor appoints two school board members
Mayor Beth Holtzman appointed William D. Tate to a full three-year term on the Ventnor City Board of Education. Tate was originally appointed to fill an unexpired term, and will now serve a full term that expires May 15, 2022.
The mayor also appointed Lori Abbott to a three-year term on the board. Abbott will take the seat vacated by former school board President James Pacanowski, who served on the board for nine years, but declined reappointment.
