The annual Kenny Wayland Memorial Run will be held Sunday, May 26 at the Ventnor Community Building.

VENTNOR – The annual Kenny Wayland Memorial Scholarship 5K and 10K Run and Fun Walk will be held 9 a.m. Sunday, May 26 at the Ventnor Community Building, 6500 Atlantic Ave.

The 5K/10K out and back course starts at Newport and Atlantic avenues. The fun walk is held on the boardwalk.

The event honors firefighter Kenneth Wayland who died at age 35 on Dec. 15, 1972 while fighting a fire in high-rise building. While searching for an occupant of the fourth-floor apartment, Wayland was unable to exit the apartment and was forced to jump out a window. He died five days later from injuries sustained during the fall. Ironically, the occupant had already exited the apartment without notifying authorities.

Ventnor City Firefighters FMBA Local 38 has staged the run since the year 2000. Proceeds from the event provide funding for scholarships that are awarded to high school seniors based on financial need, academics and community service. To date, more than $65,000 has been awarded to more than 80 Ventnor City students.

Water, bagels and oranges will be provided after the event. Trophies and medals will be awarded to top finishers in various categories  following the event Results will be posted at www.jbsportstiming.com.

Online registration is $25 until midnight May 24 and includes T-shirt. Registration  6-7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 25 at the Community Building or Sunday morning at the event is $30. T-shirts available while supplies last.
