MARGATE – In the heat of summer 2019 on Absecon Island, travel to the Caribbean for a whimsical one-of-a-kind theater experience. A modern take on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, “The Little Mermaid,” Margate Players 2’s production of “Once on This Island” tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of the island.

The hit Broadway musical ‘Once on This Island’ will be presented at the Dominick A. Potena Performing Arts Center, 7804 Amherst Ave., 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, July 18-20 and 2 p.m. Saturday, July 20.

Through almost non-stop song and dance, this full-hearted musical tells the story of the fantastical gods who rule the island as they guide Ti Moune on a quest that will test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and even death.

The cast includes local children between the ages of 8 and 13 under the direction of Jefferson Heller, with musical direction by Debbie Roland, choreography by Melanie Brough, and production managed by Rachel Waldman. Mia Fabi is  stage manager.

The show is double cast, with different actors playing the roles on Thursday  and Saturday afternoon, and Friday and Saturday evening. Actors in the leading roles include Morgan Murphy and Roselyn Driscoll as Ti Moune, and Vincent Piraino and Niko Dounoulis as Daniel.

General admission tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors and may be purchased at the door.

This is the third and final production in the theater group’s lineup for summer 2019.
