MAYS LANDING – The Atlantic County Police Training Academy will hold a 15-week Basic Course for County Corrections Officers beginning Aug. 26 at Atlantic Cape Community College. It is the first training course held at Atlantic Cape since an agreement earlier this year to relocate the academy from the Canale Training Center in Egg Harbor Township to the college’s Mays Landing campus.
“We have been working for a number of years to move our academy to the Atlantic Cape campus,” Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson said. “We believe the recruits will benefit by being on a college campus with access to a variety of resources and opportunities.”
The Atlantic County Police Training Academy is operated by the Atlantic County Department of Public Safety.
The academy provides various types of training including a police recruit class for those who aspire to be police officers as well as in-service training for sworn officers to enhance existing skills and knowledge and learn best practices in law enforcement for career advancement.
Fifteen recruits will participate in the Basic Course for County Corrections Officers with physical training, military drills and firearms instruction as well as self-defense and emergency response. Classroom instruction will focus on law enforcement and ethics, stress management, contraband and evidence processing, drug interdiction and identification. Those who successfully complete the course will earn 15 college credits through Atlantic Cape.
“We are very proud of the academy and the outstanding training it provides to ensure the safety and protection of our residents and visitors,” Levinson said.
Of these 15 recruits, 10 will serve in the Atlantic County Justice Facility, three will serve at the Cape May County Correctional Facility and two at the Salem County Correctional Facility.
