ATLANTIC CITY – Experience historical landmarks, events, and subcultures of Atlantic City at the upcoming Walking Tour Series coordinated by Stockton University’s Office of Continuing Studies.
Guided tours will be led by Atlantic City historian and Stockton adjunct professor Levi Fox. Fox will explore three different themes in three different neighborhoods – Chelsea, Ducktown, and the “Orange Loop.” All tours will be held 10 a.m. to noon Sundays, and will start and end in the same locations.
Anyone interested in attending is asked to wear walking shoes and bring a water bottle, as each tour will cover 2-3 miles of parks, city streets and Boardwalk.
The series’ schedule is as follows:
Tour 1, Sep. 15: “Veteran’s Heritage Tour.” Starting in the historic Chelsea neighborhood at the Stockton Atlantic City campus, 3711 Atlantic Ave., this tour will honor the service of our veterans of the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War and more. Learn about Atlantic City’s involvement in various military campaigns, as well as the hometown heroes who braved them all. This tour will include stops at O’Donnell Memorial Park, Ocean Club, Ritz-Carlton and Boardwalk Hall.
Tour 2, Sept. 22: “Ducktown Revitalization Tour.” Once known as Atlantic City’s “Little Italy,” Ducktown used to be home to mobsters including Nicodemo Scarfo and Salvatore Merlino. More recently, this historic town is known for its budding art scene, diversity of restaurants, and “The Walk” outdoor shopping mall. Learn about current culture and revitalization efforts taking place, starting at the Noyes Arts Garage, 2200 Fairmount Ave. Notable stops will include the Noyes Arts Garage, Dante Hall, White House Sub Shop, Dock Oyster House and the 500 Club site.
Tour 3, Sept. 29: “Louisa Mack’s LGBT Tour.” Now known as the “Orange Loop,” a reference to the orange properties on the Monopoly board, this neighborhood once was considered the “gay-borhood” of Atlantic City. Various nightclubs and bars hosted by Louisa Mack made this area a popular spot for the LGBT community. In 2014, Atlantic City’s first openly gay mayor, Don Guardian, declared Park Place the city’s official gay-friendly beach. This tour will begin at Bourre Restaurant, 201 S. New York Ave, and will include visits to the Atlantic City Civil Rights Garden, and former locations of the Brass Rail, Snake Alley, the Entertainer’s Club, and the Lark Inn.
The cost is $25 per tour or $65 for the entire series. There is a discount available until Aug. 30; use code “EARLYWALK” to save $5.
