LONGPORT – The Board of Commissioners recently announced that ongoing remediation efforts at  Borough Hall will require changing the polling location for the Nov. 5 general election. The new polling location will be at the Longport Volunteer Fire Department Firehouse located at 2301 Atlantic Ave. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The firehouse is located next to Longport Borough Hall. Voters can park in the same parking lot to access the new polling location. ADA parking will be available directly across from the firehouse and signage will be placed to help direct voters to the new location.

“Some residents might recall that in the past, the firehouse was once used as the borough’s polling location, it was changed when municipal offices moved into what is now Borough Hall,” Longport Mayor Nicholas Russo said in a release. “Due to the proximity to Borough Hall and the shared parking lot, we anticipate that the change in location will go smoothly and hope to have Commission Chambers ready in time for the June primary election.”

During the weekend of Aug. 18, the HVAC equipment that services Commission Chambers failed, and high heat and extreme humidity allowed for conditions for mold growth in the room.

Air quality and environmental testing revealed the need to seal off the room for remediation. Testing also indicated the need to remediate another location in Borough Hall, the Centennial Room, which could have served as an alternative polling location. With both rooms sealed, the Atlantic County Board of Elections approved the firehouse as an alternative polling location.
