Marlene May does a read through with a cast member.

VENTNOR – South Jersey Players, a local non-profit theater group, will present Lee Blessing’s play, “Eleemosynary,” 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 27-28 and 3 p.m. Sunday, March 29 at Ventnor Coffee, 108 N. Dorset Ave.

Marlene May directs this poignant, family-friendly play, which probes into the delicate relationship of three singular women – a grandmother, mother and daughter all struggling to find validation through their unique versions of power.

The grandmother, Dorothea, seeks to assert her independence through strong-willed eccentricity; her brilliant daughter, Artie, flees her mother’s stifling domination; and Artie’s daughter, Echo, is a child of exceptional intellect and sensitivity, who spells to win.The title word, which is the winning word in the coveted National Spelling Bee, eleemosynary, means “charitable.”

The cast includes Dayle Friedman as Dorothea, Shirlee DiBacco as Artie and Meghan Blish as Echo.

Heidi Mae is stage-managing the production.

‘Eleemosynary’ will also be performed Friday-Sunday, April 3-5 at Brigantine Lighthouse Players, 1501 W. Brigantine Ave. in Brigantine.

Tickets are $15 at the door, and reservations are now being accepted for performances at both venues. Call Marlene May at 347-920-6399.
