The Gowdys created this sand sculpture in their Galloway Township back yard to honor health care workers during the coronavirus pandemic here and abroad.

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP – World renowned sand sculptor John Gowdy and his wife Laura Cimador started their Galloway Township backyard sand sculpture to honor Italians who have survived difficult times during the COVID-19 virus. The couple owns a home near Venice.

“Right now it’s so difficult for us to be away from our beloved Italy, our family and all dear friends,” Gowdy posted on his Facebook page. “From our heart to your heart we dedicate a thought to every victim of Covid-19, to the sick and to all those who leave this life in the arms of angels.”

The sculpture originally honored the people of Italy who have suffered greatly under the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gowdy, a retired Atlantic City Police captain who has been creating sand scuptures on beaches around the world for more than 25 years, said he revised the sculpture to honor all the health care workers of the world who are working to save people from this invisible enemy.
