Dorset Avenue Bridge

VENTNOR – Effective April 23 through June 1, the Dorset Avenue Bridge will remain in the closed-to-navigation position midnight to 8 a.m. daily to help reduce exposure of bridge operators to COVID-19.

During the closure, the bridge will open on signal at 2, 4 and 6 a.m. as long as at least two hours notice is provided. Call to 609-909-7200 to request an opening.

There is always one bridge operator in the tower. The decision to temporarily eliminate one overnight shift was based upon the county’s efforts to maintain essential services, while being cognizant of the need to reduce employees’ risk of exposure by decreasing the amount of time they are working away from home, according to county Spokeswoman Linda Gilmore.

The vertical clearance of the bridge in the closed-to-navigation position is 9 feet above mean high water. Vessels able to safely pass through the bridge may do so at any time.

The bridge will not be opened for emergencies, according to the county.

Beach Thorofare and West Canal may be used as alternate routes for vessels unable to pass through the bridge during this time. Mariners should exercise caution when transiting the area.
