LONGPORT – The Board of Commissioners last month revised its trash and recycling collection regulations to allow residents to put out the trash along with recycling, which is collected weekly during the summer months.

The previously approved resolution setting 6 p.m. as the earliest time for residents to put out trash and recycling during the summer, was again revised Aug. 6 after one commissioner said part-time residents often leave earlier than that on Sunday to beat the traffic back to their homes in Pennsylvania and New York.

Commissioner Dan Lawler asked the commissioners to allow the trash and recycling to be put on the curb no earlier than noon on Sunday, the day before the Atlantic County Utilities Authority conducts regular trash and recycling pickup in the borough.

In other business, the board passed a resolution allowing one of the borough’s two restaurants, Catch, to set up additional tables along the curbline during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It also held first reading on an ordinance revising the borough’s Vehicles and Traffic ordinance regarding parking along Ventnor Avenue near the Longport Bridge. The ordinance would eliminate parking on both sides of Ventnor Avenue between 32nd Avenue and the JFK Bridge. Currently there is no parking on the south side of the street. The ordinance would eliminate three parking spaces on the north side of the street.

The ordinance was recommended by the Police Department to reduce congestion in the area where the road narrows as it approaches the bridge.

Resident Mark Hyman asked the board to delay introduction of the ordinance until the proposal could be discussed with the three affected homeowners. Two of the properties have driveways on side streets and the middle property has a driveway on Ventnor Avenue. However, Hyman said other neighbors use the spots when they have visitors.

A public hearing on the ordinance will be held 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19.

Also, Mayor Nicholas Russo appointed Kate Subranni to fill an unexpired term on the Longport Public Library Board of Trustees. She will fill the unexpired three-year term vacated by Trustee Elizabeth Peterson-Ricci.

The board also approved a new slate of members to serve on the borough’s green team, Sustainable Longport. The team was inactive after the advisory committee members’ terms of office expired on Dec. 31, 2019. Borough Clerk Monica Kyle said the new members would provide renew energy in helping the borough obtain certification from the Sustainable Jersey organization.

Members include Commissioner Jim Leeds, Zoning Officer Bruce Funk, Public Works Supervisor Chris Berenotto, and residents Chris Berenotto, Suzy Lawler, Connie Pappas, Cynthia Meli, Ellen Sall, Debbie Frank, Marsha Walsh, Ben Kirshner, Lisa Stern, John and Barbra Piotrowski, Michele Hansberry, Alexis Browsh and Sustainable Downbeach member Monica Coffey.
