The Atlantic Cape May County Sustainable Jersey Regional Hub noon, Friday, Aug. 28 will present the first of a two-part virtual event focused on what communities can do to be more resilient in the face of emergencies such as flooding and wildfires. The event will be held online via the Zoom meeting platform.

Friday’s event will feature NJ Assistant Commissioner for Climate and Flood Resilience David Rosenblatt and Lisa Auermuller of the Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve.

“Climate change is impacting communities across the globe in many different ways. While it sometimes seems daunting when you think about how to turn things around, there are real, practical steps communities can take to be better prepared for emergencies that will impact us here in South Jersey,” Hub Co-Chair Amy Menzel said. “This two-part virtual event will look at actions and resources for both coastal and inland communities, including how information is communicated during an emergency. This information is relevant for everyone in our region, and across the state.”

The event, which had originally been planned as an in-person workshop in March, was postponed due to the pandemic.

“This is such an important topic with so much to cover; we decided to break it into two online sessions,” Menzel noted.

The second session will be held 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23 and will feature Bill Brash of the New Jersey Urban and Community Forestry Advisory Council, and will highlight steps local towns have taken to implement these actions. This session will address communication of essential information during an emergency.

“We’re very excited about the presenters for this two-part series and we hope that offering the event online will expand our reach. The information is truly relevant to people across the state,” Hub Co-Chair Ralph Cooper said. “Like all Hub events, the goal is not only to provide timely and relevant information from environmental leaders and experts, but also connect green teams and municipal leaders with each other to share resources, to collaborate and to help each other to strengthen our communities.”

The Atlantic Cape May Sustainable Jersey Hub was formed to support local green teams, but Hub events are always open to the public.

“This event will address information that applies not only to green teams, but also to municipal and emergency management officials and elected leaders. We encourage everyone to attend,” Cooper said.
