Fill out the Census online.

MARGATE – The U.S. Census has taken a back seat to the COVID-19 pandemic, with Downbeach second homeowners lagging behind the state in responding to the count.

To reach second homeowners and those who own rental properties, Sustainable Margate Chairman Steve Jasiecki asked what he could do to help get even part-time residents counted.

“I don’t think people realize that second homeowners know they need to be counted,” Jasiecki said. “Fewer responses means less federal funding for us. Even Atlantic City has a higher count than any of the Downbeach towns.”

The statewide response rate as of Aug. 24 is 66.3%. Ventnor’s rate is 38.8%, while Margate’s is 30.2% and Longport’s is 22.9%. Atlantic City’s rate is 41.9%.

Promoting the 2020 Census is part of the actions recommended to receive credits toward the Sustainable Jersey certification program. Having the certification allows municipalities to apply for grants to support sustainability activities. Sustainable Margate was awarded a grant to develop an inventory of street trees. Ventnor City received a grant to purchase a portable water filtration system that’s used at various community events. And Longport received grant funds to erect a permanent filtered water fountain.

After discussing it with the committee, Jasiecki decided he would use his videography talents to make a video encouraging everyone to fill out their 2020 Census online.

He called an old childhood friend, Maryann McElroy, better known as Mary Mac, a Margate resident who is a disc jock on WIBG 94.3 radio station, to help.

“She was the perfect choice,” Jasiecki said. “She’s a Jersey girl willing to do her part to get the message out. She has a great personality.”

The video was filmed in front of the Margate Pier.

“It only took a few takes to get it right,” he said.

Jasiecki has since posted the video on YouTube and shared it on various Downbeach social media pages. It has also been forwarded to the state organization for sharing in other New Jersey shore towns.

Sustainable Jersey reached out to green teams around the state earlier this year to ask them to participate in the Complete Count effort. But then, COVID-19 hit, and everything shut down, Jasiecki said.

The Census is conducted every 10 years and ensures each community receives its fair share of federal funding and Congressional representation.

Shore communities, where there are many seasonal houses, are being undercounted. Adding those homes will ensure Downbeach is well represented.

If you live in multiple places throughout the year, count yourself at the address where you reside most of the time. If you split your time evenly between two or more places, count yourself where you were staying on April 1, 2020. However, a Census response is required for every property.

Filling out the Census online takes just a few minutes for part-time residents:

  1. Visit www.my2020census.gov
  2. Enter the Census ID or address of the secondary property.
  3. Enter zero for the number of people living at that property.
  4. Hit Next, and when a soft error occurs, click Next again.
  5. Select “no” when asked to confirm no person lives at this property.
  6. Select a primary reason – seasonal (most likely).
  7. Complete!
