Flames and thick black smoke rise above the Boardwalk in the early stages of the blaze.

OCEAN CITY – Multiple fire companies and emergency responders responded this morning to battle a fire on the Ocean City Boardwalk at the Playland’s Castaway Cove amusement park.

Video showed firefighters spraying water on the iconic pirate ship replica that serves as Playland’s main entrance overlooking the boardwalk between 10th and 11th streets.

Robert Green, a Somers Point engineer who designed the pirate ship, said the fire appeared to be contained to Playland’s arcade building at the front of the amusement park.

By 11 a.m. flames were no longer visible, but black smoke was billowing over the Boardwalk.

Authorities have not yet released any information about the fire.
