EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – 1 Piece Each, a global effort to clean the plant, is hosting a trash pick-up at Longport Dog Beach, 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20. The cleanup is a rain or shine event.

The premise behind the non-profit organization is that if every person picks up just one piece of trash, it can make a serious impact on the environment and quality of life for future generations.

Volunteers will meet in the parking lot off Ocean Drive, which is located at the foot of the Longport-Ocean City bridge in Egg Harbor Township.

Free hot coffee will be provided by Good Times Coffee Company, and buckets and gloves will be provided by The Home Depot in Egg Harbor Township.

Malibu Beach is a “pack it in, pack it out” park popular with the pups.

The Malibu Beach Wildlife Management Area, known to many locals and visitors as Longport Dog Beach, is managed by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection. It is located within Egg Harbor Township, and nestled between Longport, Ocean City and Somers Point.

Dog lovers flock to the beach in summer, but the park is used year-round as a great place for pups to get exercise. Although it is a pack-it-in, pack-it-out facility, mounting trash put the viability of the dog beach in question. Ocean City has since agreed to pick up trash at the site during the summer season.

About half of the beach is off-limits to dogs and their owners to protect a nesting area for indigenous bird species.
