MARGATE – The Board of Commissioners Thursday, April 1 awarded several contracts for various roadway and firehouse improvements, Public Works vehicles, along with annual events planned by the Margate Business Association.

The board awarded a $233,333 contract to Zone Striping, Inc. of Glassboro for the Atlantic Avenue road diet project, which will reduce the two-lane in each direction roadway to one lane in each direction with a center turn lane and widened bike lanes. Zone Striping was the lower of two bids received. Traffic Line of Farmingdale submitted a bid for $318,105 on the bidding due date, March 25.

The city will fund the work with a $287,000 grant it received from the NJ Department of Transportation. The work is slated for completion by Memorial Day.

The city also awarded a $604,840 contract to Aliano Brothers General Contractors of Vineland to build an addition at Firehouse No. 2 on Fulton Avenue. A total of six bids were received on March 25, with the highest bid totaling $802,668 submitted by Coastal Land Contractor, Inc. of Pittsgrove.

According to Fire Chief Dan Adams, approving the expansion of living quarters at the firehouse has been on the “backburner” since 2011. The contract amount was nearly $50,000 higher than the engineer’s estimate, which Adams attributed to the increasing price of construction materials over the last several months.

The city’s Public Works police sign shop will be demolished for a cost of $37,675. Caravella Demolition of East Hanover was the lowest of five bids received. The highest bid submitted by Site Enterprises of Egg Harbor Township was $94,000.

The board also agreed to purchase a 2020 Ford F-450 from Cherry Hill Winner Ford under the state contract system for $70,864. The new vehicle will replace a 2011 dump truck that is in service and was used during Hurricane Sandy. The new vehicle will have stainless steel components to stand up to the salt air and water.

It will also purchase a street sweeper through the Sourcewell Cooperative Purchasing System. The city will pay Golden Equipment of Monett, Missouri $187,960 to supply the Tymco street sweeper Model 435, with equipment. The city’s current street sweeper is in service and the new vehicle is needed to comply with water quality and environmental regulations. It will take 4-6 months for the vehicle to be delivered.

Additionally, the commissioners approved a $98,999 contract with the MBA to conduct a marketing campaign that promotes the city as a destination and various community events, including Beachstock, Fall Funfest, Shop Small Weekend, and other holiday events.
