Margate residents and visitors learned a lot about the local environment during the city’s Earth Day celebration, Saturday, April 24.
MARGATE – Earth Day was founded in 1970 as a day of education about the fragility of the environment and to create awareness about the effects of pollution and chemical wastes.
The city celebrated Earth Day in its own unique way Saturday, April 24 in a ‘Restore Our Earth’ collaboration between the Sustainable Margate green team and the Margate Business Association.

Sustainable Margate Chairman Steve Jasiecki, along with members of the green team, set up a table across from event sponsor Bocca Coal Fired Bistro and shared information about how to make Margate a more sustainable community.
Little Skylar Walk, 7, of Ventnor stopped by the table to get an education about the types of shellfish swim in the ocean waters surrounding Absecon Island. She learned that horseshoe grabs have blue blood that contains special properties that allow it to be used to test medicines for humans.
Everyone who stopped by received a free canvas shopping bag.
The green team distributed brochures on how to recycle properly, learn about how the Marine Mammal Stranding Center rehabilitates injured sea creatures, such as seals, dolphins and sea turtles, and tested residents’ knowledge about Margate’s environment. Those who completed the ecology quiz received a coupon for a free Sizzli breakfast sandwich at Wawa.
The MBA also held a ‘Find the Duck’ scavenger hunt and displayed posters created by local students in businesses in the commercial district. Anyone who found a little rubber ducky was treated to a coupon for a free slice of pizza at Bocca hidden inside the duck.
