The Atlantic County Utilities Authority will collect trash and recycling as scheduled on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31 and advises residents and visitors to keep trash off the beach this summer.

The authority advises that it’s just as important to pick up trash and recycling off the beach as it is at home. Use the trash and recycling receptacles provided on the beach or bring items back home. Never leave litter behind. It will get washed into the ocean and may be mistaken for food by marine animals, cause injuries to those animals, and pollute our waterways.

“As our population increases in Atlantic County throughout the summer season, so does the amount of waste generated in our communities,” ACUA President Rick Dovey said. “We remind visitors and residents: give us that waste to handle, do not give it to the ocean,”

In addition to providing curbside waste collection to most Atlantic County communities, ACUA is responsible for managing and finding a final home for that waste. Currently, the waste is either placed in ACUA’s state-of-the-art landfill, which turns gases created in the landfilling process into energy, or is sorted to be recycled into something new.

The ACUA also provides Valet Service to the residents of Ventnor, Margate and Longport for a fee during the summer season. The ACUA’s collection staff will retrieve the containers from the residence, empty them and return them to the residence. Participating residents will not need to bring containers to the curb.

Those interested in valet service can complete an application for the service online at ACUA.com make payment via credit card or check. For more information, call the ACUA at 609-272-6950.

ACUA also administers the Atlantic County Clean Communities Program, which provides opportunities for residents to participate in road and community cleanups.
