Longport Police

LONGPORT – The body of a Longport man was recovered from the bay near Monroe Avenue in Margate and he died early Saturday morning from injuries sustained when he went into the bay, police said.

According to Sgt. Ray Burgan of the Longport Police Department, police were dispatched at 7:22 p.m. Friday, May 28 to 22nd Avenue at the bay for a welfare check on Andrew Stern, age 60, who had gone missing and was believed to have fallen into the bay.

Police were advised at 7:29 p.m. that several witnesses observed a body in the water off 33rd Avenue. The U.S. Coast Guard responded to the area and retrieved the body just off Monroe Avenue. Longport and Margate City Police were on location assisting with lifesaving efforts.

Burgan said Stern succumbed to his injuries in the early morning hours Saturday, May 29.

Longport Police are investigating the incident. Burgan said their preliminary investigation revealed no evidence of foul play at this time, and that an autopsy would be performed.
