EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – Electric vehicle drivers, supporters, and curious residents are invited to attend the Atlantic County Utility Authority’s Electric Vehicle Celebration, which will highlight the climate, clean air, and cost savings benefits provided by electric cars and trucks on Wednesday, Sept. 29. The celebration is part of National Drive Electric Week, a coast-to-coast celebration of electric vehicles, Sept. 25 to Oct. 3.

“The transportation sector is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. Fortunately, there are many opportunities to reduce emissions. ACUA has a long history of using alternative fuel vehicles and we make greening our fleet a priority,” ACUA President Rick Dovey said.  “Drive Electric week gives community members a chance to see how real people and local businesses are using, enjoying, and benefitting from EVs.”

The  ACUA will hold a virtual webinar, plus an in-person vehicle show as part of a hybrid event.

The ACUA will host a free virtual “Lunch and Learn,” 12-1 p.m. on Zoom, which features industry experts sharing the latest developments and incentives for New Jersey drivers and fleet owners.

Presenters include:

  • Andrea Friedman of the NJ Department of Environmental Protection’s Drive Green Program
  • Eve Gabel-Frank of ChargEVC
  • James Sherman of Climate Change Mitigation Technologies
  • Dr. Patrick Hossay of Stockton University

These experts will share information on a variety of topics, including NJ incentives and policy developments, new technology, efforts to address barriers to EV adoption and to improve access to the EV charging infrastructure as well as information on medium and heavy-duty EV trucks and equipment. This event also allows participants to ask questions.

The ACUA will also host an in-person car show 4-6 p.m.at the ACUA Environmental Park, 6700 Delilah Rd. EV drivers are welcome and encouraged to show off their electric ride at ACUA. This includes plug-in hybrid vehicles, all electric vehicles, and electric bicycles too.

Advanced registration is required for the Zoom meeting or to register a vehicle for the in-person vehicle show, visit www.acua.com/driveelectric.

“Last year’s Drive Electric event was 100% virtual,” ACUA Communications Manager Amy Menzel noted. “It was incredibly informative and fun, too, but we are so pleased to be able to take a ‘hybrid’ approach this year, with both and online and in-person component. Virtual presentations allow us to bring experts from outside our immediate area right to us, so that you’ll be able to take in a lot of great information over your lunch break. The in-person event from 4 to 6 p.m. is incredibly valuable too. A lot of people have concerns about charging and what it’s like to own or drive an EV. This is the perfect chance to speak directly to EV drivers.”

There are now more than 1.5 million EVs on the road in the United States, and a recent survey by Consumer Reports and the Union of Concerned Scientists showed that more than 60% of prospective car buyers in the U.S. are interested in electric vehicles. There are now more than 40 models available in the U.S., with many of the newer models having a range of 200-300 miles or more.
