Downbeach towns have been awarded $800,000 to reconstruct roads in Ventnor, Margate and Longport.

The awards announced Oct. 26 are part of the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s $161 million in Fiscal Year 2022 Municipal Aid grants, awarded to 541 cities and towns across the state to advance road, bridge, safety, and quality-of-life improvements.

The DOT received 625 applications from 547 different municipalities with a total of $363 million requested, according to a release. Project applications were evaluated and rated on their merits by NJDOT staff and reviewed by an independent panel of New Jersey municipal engineers.

“These funds are crucial to municipalities for the completion of projects that improve quality of life and safety for New Jersey residents,” NJ Gov. Phil Murphy said.

Ventnor will receive $310,000 for reconstruction of Suffolk Avenue from Edgewater Avenue to Fremont Ave. Margate will receive $250,000 for reconstruction of Winchester Avenue from Exeter Avenue to Douglass Avenue. Longport will receive $240,000 for reconstruction of a portion of Monmouth Avenue.

“The Murphy administration is committed to improving local communities by providing millions of dollars in aid to municipalities to make important safety, infrastructure, and quality-of-life improvements without burdening local property taxpayers,” NJDOT Commissioner Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti said. “We are pleased to award grants to nearly every municipality in New Jersey.”

Under the Municipal Aid grant program, each county is apportioned a share of the total funding based on population and the number of local centerline miles. Municipalities compete for portions of their county’s share. NJDOT provides 75% of the grant amount when a town awards a contract and the remaining 25% upon completion of the project.
