Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines sign merger agreement.

Spirit Airlines, Inc. and Frontier Group Holdings, Inc., the parent company of Frontier Airlines, Inc., announced Monday, Feb. 7 they have entered a “definitive merger agreement” that will bring low fares to more travelers in the United States and internationally.

“We worked jointly…to arrive at a combination of two complimentary businesses that together will create America’s most competitive ultra-low fare airline for the benefit of consumers,” Frontier Board of Directors Chairman William A. Franke said in a statement.

Spirit CEO and President Ted Christie said the transaction would “democratize air travel.”

In addition to ultra-low fares, the merger would expand career opportunities, he said.

“We look forward to uniting our talented teams to shake up the airline industry while also continuing our commitment to excellent guest service,” Christie said.

The merger will provide $1 billion in consumer savings, offer more than 1,000 flights to 145 destinations and 19 countries, expand the fleet of aircrafts, start new routes, and expand frequent flyer and membership offerings.

They expect to add 10,000 jobs and strengthen their business profiles, the release stated.

The agreement will close in the second half of 2022.
