The annual Kenny Wayland Memorial Run will be held in person this year..

VENTNOR – The 2020 Kenny Wayland Memorial Run is back this year after a two-year hiatus due to the coronavirus. Ventnor City firefighters will host the annual scholarship fundraiser 9 a.m. Sunday, May 29. The event includes a 5K, 10K and fun run on the boardwalk.

The run honors firefighter Kenny Wayland who died at age 35 fighting a high-rise fire on Dec. 15, 1972. While searching for an occupant on the fourth floor, Wayland was unable to exit the apartment and was forced to jump out of a window. He died five days later from injuries sustained in the fall.

The Ventnor City Firefighters FMBA Local 38 has conducted the run since 2000. Proceeds of the event provide scholarships to high school seniors based on financial need, academics and community service. To date, more than $90,000 has been awarded to Ventnor’s high school graduates.

The race starts at Stratford Place and Atlantic Avenue, with a finish at New Haven Avenue. Pre-registration by 11:59 p.m. Friday, May 27 is $25; $30 on Saturday, May 28 and race day. Pick up packets at the Ventnor City Community Building at 6500 Atlantic Avenue on the beach side of the building.

Trophies and medals will be awarded in different categories. Registration includes a T-shirt while supplies last. Refreshments will be provided after the event.
