MARGATE – Sustainable Downbeach will host a seed starting workshop 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 16 as part of the “Bloom Nights” at the Martin Bloom Pavilion in Margate.

Raven Ahmed , owner of Earth First Native Plant Nursery, will demonstrate how to plant seeds using the right materials and techniques to grow a successful garden.

Whether you want to grow your own herbs and vegetables or wish to plant a pollinator garden, properly planting your seeds will help increases the success of your garden.

Earth First Native Plant Nursery offers a variety of hard-to-find native plants for people wishing to create a native wildlife garden. Their mission is to help people create the wildlife habitat needed to reverse the decline of bird and pollinator populations. A variety of plants including nectar and larva host plants are needed to reestablish these species.

They only sell plants that are native to the Mid-Atlantic seaboard. Raven’s approach to gardening is to grow localized native plants without petroleum-based fertilizers or chemical pesticides.

Home butterfly/pollinator gardens have become very popular with people who want to increase butterfly habitat. Pollinator gardens provide food and shelter for the local wildlife populations. Ravin will demonstrate how to properly plant your seeds and explain the little nuances of the variety of plants

The program will be held at the Martin Bloom Pavilion at 101 S. Huntington Ave Margate, behind the Margate Library.

The presentation is free but registration is requested.  Call the Martin Bloom Pavilion at 609-822-2285 to reserve your spot. Seeds and seed pots will be available for participants to take home.
