ATLANTIC CITY — The AC Walking Tour Series is back Fridays in July, and this summer features two new tours of the city sponsored by Stockton University’s Office of Continuing Studies and Adult Education.The series allows participants to actively experience the historical landmarks, events, prominent figures and subcultures of Atlantic City.
The new tours of the South Inlet and Upper Chelsea neighborhoods of Atlantic City are osted by Historian and Adjunct Professor Levi Fox. Fox also leads tours of Ducktown and the Northside neighborhods.
This year’s tours are:
July 7 – Ducktown Revitalization
The historic neighborhood of Ducktown, once known as Little Italy, is now known for its budding art scene, great restaurants and The Walk shopping mall. The tour will focus on local markets, churches, current cultural flair and revitalization efforts taking place between Missouri and Texas avenues. Notable sites include the Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton University, Dante Hall, White House Sub Shop, Dock’s Oyster House and the historic 500 Club site.
July 14 – South Inlet Tour
Learn more about the historic South Inlet, considered by many to be Atlantic City’s “best kept secret.” This is a new tour that will highlight the Absecon Lighthouse, Altman Playground, Ocean Casino Resort and notable businesses along New Hampshire, Atlantic and Pacific avenues.
July 21 – Upper Chelsea Tour
This is a new tour that features Stockton Atlantic City, historic architecture, parks, public art, small businesses, multiple faith communities and some of the city’s famous locally owned restaurants. This tour complements the “Lower Chelsea Tour” featured previously in the series.
July 28 – Northside Heritage Tour
Atlantic City’s “Northside” has historically been a predominantly African American neighborhood founded prior to the Great Migration. This tour will visit historical landmarks such as Kentucky Avenue, New York Avenue, St. James AME church and the Civil Rights Garden.
All tours are $10 per person and will begin at 10 a.m. Participants are encouraged to bring their walking shoes, sunscreen and a water bottle, as each tour will cover 2-3 miles of parks, city streets and the Boardwalk.
