Red Heuermann has been charged with killing three women 10 years ago in Gilgo Beach, NY.
Atlantic County Prosecutor William Reynolds today issued a statement saying authorities do not believe there is any connection between the Gilgo Beach homicides and the discovery of four women found in a similar setting in Egg Harbor Township in 2006.
Speculation that the two cases were somehow connected ensued shortly after Suffolk County Police arrested Rex Heuermann, 59, and charged him with the murders of three of 10 sex workers found murdered in Gilgo Beach 10 years ago. Heuermann was charged with killing Melissa Barthelemy in 2009, and Megan Waterman and Amber Costello in 2010.
Atlantic County authorities have no suspects in the homicides of Barbara Breidor, 42, Molly Dilts, 20, Kim Raffo, 35, and Tracy Roberts, 23, who were discovered Nov. 20, 2006 in a ditch behind the Golden Key Motel in the West Atlantic City section of Egg Harbor Township with their heads pointed toward Atlantic City.
“Due to numerous inquiries and speculation from the media over the past several weeks, we feel it is appropriate to issue a statement regarding any connection, or lack thereof, between the 2006 homicides occurring on the Black Horse Pike in Egg Harbor Township, NJ and the Gilgo Beach homicides,” Reynolds said in a statement. “At this point in time, after ACPO detectives recently met with Suffolk County detectives to compare timelines, dates, methodologies, etc. of both cases, there does not seem to be a connection between the suspect in the Gilgo Beach case and the Atlantic County homicides from 2006.”
The case is being jointly investigated by the Prosecutor’s Office and Egg Harbor Township Police, with assistance from state and federal authorities, he said.
“Authorities will continue to follow all leads until the perpetrator of those crimes is brought to justice,” Reynolds said. “Given the open nature of the investigation, there will be no further comment on this case in order to minimize the possibility of controlled information getting out into the public that could ultimately jeopardize the investigation.”
