Volunteer Steve Jasicki retrieves the first four ducks across the finish line.

MARGATE – As with all events put on by the Margate Business Association, more and more people attend every year.

The Sunday, Aug. 13 “quack-a-palooza” Duck Derby held at the Margate Pier on Washington Avenue brought out hundreds of people to watch little rubber duckies make their way through a a bay course to the finish line.

The MBA made a last minute decision to revise the course due to the incoming tide and easterly wind that created ripples in the bay. The course was shorter, but the duckies took their time making their way to the funnel at the end of the course, where a kayaker retrieved the first four ducks across the finish line.

Activities started at 11 a.m. and children tried their hand at a fishing game and giant Jenga. Commissioner of Public Safety Cathy Horn played a game against her son Harrison, who is headed to the University of Delaware in a few weeks. The winner agreed to buy lunch.

USA DJ will provided musical entertainment, and of course, the Chicken Dance song encouraged both adults and children to dance like ducks.

Visa gift cards of $1,000 were awarded to first place, $500 to second place and $250 to third place. Honorable Mention was awarded a duck cap. More than 1,500 tickets were sold. Proceeds benefit MBA community programs. Winners contact wendy@margatehasmore.com.
