Part-time residents who own property in the Downbeach communities of Ventnor, Margate and Longport are being urged to properly winterize their homes as the cold weather sets in.

Police and fire officials have already reported water pipe breakages, which not only cause damage to the plumbing systems, but also damage the interior of the building, which could cause mold to develop and requires expensive repairs. Additionally, public employees are the first called to the scene of water breaks when neighbors notice water seeping out front doors, often on the coldest nights of the winter months.

Residents are urged to turn off their outside water bibs, hoses and showers, drain toilets and maintain heating systems at a minimum of 65 degrees.
