LONGPORT – The Board of Education Jan. 2 honored outgoing board member Michael Schiavo for his many years of dedicated service to the students and residents of the borough.

Board President Carl Tripician said Schiavo served diligently and with enthusiasm during his tenure on the board.

“Mike was such an asset, not only to the board, but to the community as well,” Tripician said. “His primary concern over his years on the board was to put the students first, but he still made sure all the stakeholders in the community were heard.”

The Board of Commissioners honored Schiavo Oct. 18 with a resolution extending gratitude for his outstanding service.

Schiavo, a history teacher at Mainland Regional High School who coached swimming for 21 years, served on the board from July 2010 to November 2023. He served as vice president and chairman of the board’s Finance Committee.

Longport is a sending district to other school districts in the area. It sends elementary school children to the Margate schools and high school students to both Atlantic City and Ocean City high schools on a tuition basis.
