James A. Carney
The Hon. James “Jim” Carney 78, of Egg Harbor Township, was born on June 5, 1945 in Queens, NY and was called home to the Lord on Jan. 19, 2024 after battling a multitude of health issues. He devoted his life to his family and was dedicated to serving his community. It is with heavy hearts and profound sorrow that we bid farewell to a remarkable man.
Carney was very proud to be a graduate of St. Peter’s in Pleasantville and a graduate of Holy Spirit High School, Class of 1963. He continued his education at Beckley College West Virginia and Stockton University. His career spanned many roles, each with a commitment to excellence and a desire to make a positive impact. He demonstrated leadership and a savvy business sense. His impressive career included president of The Collection Bureau of SJ, constable for over 50 years, Atlantic County Surrogate Judge, Commissioner of the New Jersey Supreme Court’s Surrogate’s Liaison Committee, processor for the Atlantic County Courts, Atlantic County Freeholder for 15 years, Egg Harbor Township councilman, and commissioner of the Casino Revenue Fund.
Beyond the courtroom, The Honorable James Carney was a force for positive change in various capacities. He was dedicated and devoted to the Catholic Church. He was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church for more than 50 years. He was a proud member of The Knights of Columbus (4th degree Knight), lector and served perpetual adoration for more than 20 years. His dedication to community service was further exemplified through leadership roles in the New Jersey Jaycees and his presidency of the Atlantic City Lions Club. A visionary and philanthropist, Carney created “www.TimeToMakeAWill.com,” a free public service aimed at benefiting all residents. His legacy of selfless service and advocacy for others will undoubtedly live on in the hearts and minds of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Of all of Carney’s accomplishments, his family was his greatest. He took great pleasure in spending time with his family, especially watching his grandsons play sports. He loved playing with his adored dog, Max. He had many talents, including a profound love for writing poetry, buying and selling cars and drawing funny caricatures.
He joins his mother, Margaret “Gretchen” Carney (nee Meyer), father, Rexford James Carney, brother George Carney, and sister Catherine Carney, along with many extended family in heaven. He leaves behind his beloved wife of almost 54 years Jackie (nee Gehringer), and three grown children, Dr. Michelle CarneyRay-Yoder (Chris), Adam Carney (Allison), Ryan Carney, his four cherished grandsons, Rexford, Asher, Jesse and Evan. He is also survived by his brother, Fred Carney (Tracy) along with many loving nieces, nephews, extended family and faithful friends.
In celebrating the life of James A. Carney, we honor a man whose dedication, kindness, and selflessness have left a lasting legacy. May his soul find eternal peace, and may his memory inspire us all to live with the same sense of passion for family and devotion to service that defined his remarkable life.
The first visitation will be held 4-6 p.m. Thursday Jan. 25 at Adams -Perfect Funeral Home, Inc. 1650 New Road Northfield. A second visitation will be held 9:30-11 a.m. Friday Jan. 26, followed by a Mass at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Church.
