Every child needs a pony and stable.

Downbeach did its part to save the planet this Earth Day weekend by holding events that put to good use or recycled longer wanted or needed items, keeping trash out of the landfill.

Ventnor and Margate each held their annual Shredding Events – in Margate at the Public Works Yard and in Ventnor at the Newport Avenue beachfront park. The events encourage people to shred their unwanted personal documents to prevent identify theft and recycle paper.

Downbeach green team members Dianne Birkbeck, Lee Widman and Steve Jasiecki collected used clothing for recycling.

Business was brisk in Ventnor Saturday morning as rows of cars lined up to unload bags and boxes of papers. Workers from Pro Shred Security unloaded the papers into 96-gallon receptacles before a claw in the shredding truck lifted the container and dumped the papers into the shredder.

The city’s Ventnor Go Green team also asked residents to recycle clothing, linens and luggage. The items will get a second life through an organization called Helpsy, which finds outlets for used textiles or for recycling.

Margate and Longport also held their annual Citywide Yardsale events Saturday at locations throughout the towns.

Lemonade for everyone.

It was a family affair as homeowners put out their no longer wanted items for resale to others seeking bargains. Mothers visited their adult children to help them tag and sell items, while their grandchildren sold glasses of lemonade and cookies to fill their piggy banks or raise money for charity.

Despite the chilly weather, shoppers were out in force seeking treasurers from among what others no longer want cluttering their attics and garages.
