MARGATE – The Board of Commissioners Thursday, May 2 swore-in four members of the city’s Lifeguard Pension Board. The board reappointed Richard Patterson, Brian Hiltner, Charles Collins and Greg Smallwood as members of the board, which oversees the lifeguards’ pension plan.

The board established the four-member Pension Board in 2016 to oversee the Margate Pension Plan for Lifeguards and the requirements for membership, retirement, and funding. The members will serve four-year terms.

In other business, the board approved surfing, kayaking and sailing beaches at certain locations, and a schedule for guarding bathing beaches for the 2024 summer season.

Surfing, kayaking and sailing will be permitted from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. between Barclay and Clarenden avenues, Iroquois and Plymouth avenues, and Pembroke and Sumner avenues. Surfing and kayaking only will be permitted between Delavan and Essex avenues and Kenyon and Nassau avenues.

Opening days for beach bathing are June 10 at Argyle, Clermont, Huntington, Jerome, Osborne, Thurlow, Washington and Jefferson avenues. On June 17, Gladstone Avenue beach will be opened. And on June 24, beaches will open at Vendome, Cedar Grove and Madison avenues.

On the weekends of May 24, June 15, and Sept. 13 the following beaches will be guarded if the weather cooperates at the direction of the chief: Clermont, Huntington, Thurlow and Washington avenues.

Beaches are open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and beach tags are required. Bathers are instructed to swim only where lifeguards are present.

The board also approved free beach days during the Margate Business Association’s “Thrilling Thursdays” events, when the city business community has sidewalk sales and other shopping incentive programs. The beach tag requirement is suspended on July 11, 18 and 25, and Aug. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29. Beach barbeque days are July 4-7, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1-2.
