Herb Stern Longport Scholarship program grants 19 awards

LONGPORT - The Herb Stern Scholarship Foundation presented scholarships to students at the May 21 Board of Commissioners Meeting. Nineteen Longport students were awarded a total of $28,400. Awardees are Longport students who are graduating high school seniors planning to attend college in the fall, and those already attending college or graduate school. Students are chosen based on their academic record, test scores, sports and other extracurricular activities, work and community volunteering.

Since its inception 19 years ago, the program has awarded more than $240,000 to Longport students, all funded by contributions from Longport residents.

The 2025 scholarship recipients are: 

  • Jackson Agnellini, who attends Virginia Tech where he is studying finance and real estate
  • Tommy Armstrong, who graduates from Ocean City High School this year and will attend the University of Florida
  • Luca Bahuriak, a graduate of Ocean City High School who will attend Penn State to study communications and film production
  • Nick Bimbo, a member of 2025 class of OCHS who plans to attend Rowan University to pursue firefighting studies
  • Eva Engel, who currently attends the University of Tampa where she studies fine art and design
  • Raquel Gresham, who is pursuing a master’s degree in midwifery at Thomas Jefferson University
  • Jonah Hammerstedt, who attends The Medical College at Jefferson University to become a physician
  • Kal Heyman, a recent high school graduate who plans to attend St. Bonaventure in the fall to study education and coaching
  • Thomas Holton, an OCHS graudate who plans to attend Rosemont College pursue a career in sports management
  • Tyler Lawler, student at University of South Carolina who is studying business and economics
  • Jake Meli, currently attending Villanova University and studying management information systems, math and computer science
  • John Meli, a Stockton University student who is studying accounting to become a CPA
  • Jack Schiavo, who attends St. Joseph's University majoring in economics with an interest in physics
  • Birdie Stewart, a graduate of the College of Charleston majoring in finance.
  • Kallan Tripician, currently attending Wesleyan University, majoring in biology and earth and environmental sciences with a minor in Informatics and modeling
  • Kannon Tripician will graduate from Ocean City High School and attend Wesleyan University to study physics and engineering
  • Macey Valtri, currently attending Lynn University and pursuing a degree in business
  • Madison Valtri, of Lynn University and studying communication and business
  • Nicholas Volpe, a student at the University of South Carolina majoring in biology to become a physician.

Contributions may be made at any time of the year. Checks payable to the Longport Scholarship Fund may be sent to Vanessa Wong, Treasurer, 49 N. Pelham Ave., Longport, NJ 08403. Contributions may also be made by credit card or PayPal on the website- longportscholarshipfund.com.

Board members are Herb Stern, president; Patrick Armstrong, vice president; Vanessa Wong, treasurer; Bob Stern, secretary; and Scott Stetzer, Suzy Lawler, and Nicole Schwegman.
