The Margate Business Association has announced the award of two scholarships to Margate students who are starting their college careers in the fall.
Lauren Fox, a graduate of Atlantic City High School who plans to attend University of Delaware, and Ava Catona, a graduate of Holy Spirit High School who is headed to Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, were each awarded $2,500 toward their education.
Both students wrote thoughtful, passionate essays to edge out a large field of candidates who applied to the Daniel and Maria Walters Scholarship program. The program has awarded more than $135,000 in scholarships since its inception.
This year's competition challenged students to author an essay outlining how growing up in Margate has prepared them for their future and shaped their personal growth through volunteerism, working for a Margate business and extracurricular activities. Responses to the prompt were all exceptional, and judges from the community were impressed with each unique entry. In addition to the written essay, students were required to include references from three adults, a list of school and community activities, special honors or awards, and their college plans for the fall of 2025.
Each of the winning entries spoke about Margate being an incredibly supportive, inclusive place to grow up, with numerous opportunities to be involved in the community, and impacted not only their own lives, but also on the lives of others.
