MARGATE – Thrilling Thursdays got off to a great start this season with the opening of the Margate Community Farmers Market June 12. Shoppers walked for blocks with reusable bags in hand to shop the unique makers selling their locally sourced products under colorful tents lining the parking lot at Steve & Cookies By the Bay and along Monroe and Amherst avenues.
Little Water Distillery of Atlantic City offered tastings of their locally produced spirits, including Little Water’s best-selling product – premixed espresso martini made with vodka. It was a great eye opener for a sunny Thursday morning.
With Thursday being the new Friday, summer residents were sure to pick up bouquets of flowers along with their Jersey Fresh produce and homemade breads. There was a long line waiting for the Kosher challah made by the bakers at the Ventnor Shul.
A specialty among the crafters at the market was Limone Textiles of Brigantine and Collingswood selling intricately woven wall hangings made of natural fibers. Another new vendor this year offered pickled, spiced roasted garlic in jars, along with cauliflower giardiniera. And under the bright red tent, Maria Gatta of the Red Room Café was in her usual spot rolling out some homemade gnocchi.
Another new vendor is Golden Greek Olive Oil, a first cold press extraction coming to Margate tables all the way from Crete, Greece. The Koroneiki trees on the Siganos’ family-owned olive grove are unique to the area and the oil produced offers a pleasant mild heat at the back of the throat. A fine finish to any seafood dish or salad.
The market features dozens of weekly vendors, such as Homestead, an organic farm, Misty Meadow, and Reed’s Farm, and various pop-ups throughout the summer.
Remember that a visit to the Margate beach is free on Thrilling Thursdays and area businesses offer sidewalk sales. Free movies on the beach at Granville Avenue will start on July 3.
