Downbeach locals know the best month at the beach is September. However, as summer wanes and lifeguards return to school or work, staffing is greatly reduced. Beachgoers are strongly advised to only swim at guarded beaches and only when lifeguards are present.

“We want people to be safe, so only swim when and where you see a lifeguard present,” Longport Beach Patrol Chief Matt Kelm said.

Certain beaches will be open depending on staff availability as follows:

Longport

Beaches at 16th, 26th, 30th and 33rd avenues will be staffed 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Sunday, Sept. 9. The same beaches will be staffed the weekend of Sept. 15-16. Call 609-822-3898.

Margate

Beaches at Clermont, Huntington, Thurlow, Washington and Madison avenues will be staffed 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Sunday, Sept. 9. The same beaches will be staffed the weekend of Sept. 15-16. Call 609-822-2370.

Ventnor

Beaches at Suffolk, Dorset, New Haven sand Lafayette avenues will be staffed 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily until Sunday, Sept. 9. The same beaches will be staffed the weekend of Sept. 15-16. Call 609-823-7948.
