ATLANTIC CITY – The Atlantic City Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. recently donated $5,000 to the AMI Foundation’s Dr. Jan Astin Mobile Digital Mammography Van. The funds will be used to provide free  mammograms screenings for women in Atlantic County.

“We are very grateful to Delta Sigma Theta for their thoughtful gesture and valuable contribution to this very worthy cause,” said AMI CEO David Levi, MD. “The mammography van provides screenings to more than 1,400 women in New Jersey each year, many of whom are uninsured or underinsured. These donations help us fulfill our mission and provide these women with potentially life-saving low cost or no cost mammograms.”

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a private, non-profit organization founded in 1913 by 22 women at Howard University, in Washington, D.C. The Atlantic City Alumnae Chapter chartered in 1979 has provided extensive array of public service projects and programs that promote human welfare and has awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships to area youth. It raised $5,000 for the Dr. Jan Astin Mobile Digital Mammography Van during its biannual “Celebration of Life” Breast Cancer Memorial Brunch held at Linwood Country Club Oct. 27, 2018.

The van travels throughout southeastern New Jersey to make breast cancer screening easier and more convenient. The custom-built, 38-foot van is completely self-contained. In addition to offering the latest 3D digital mammography equipment, the van provides a comfortable waiting area and a private dressing room.

The mobile van’s radiology services are accredited by the American College of Radiology and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Mammography images are read by board-certified fellowship trained radiologists at Atlantic Medical Imaging.

The screenings are for women over age 40 with no current or past breast issues.

Appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome. A prescription may not be needed.

Call the scheduling department at 609-677-XRAY (9729) to make an appointment and to confirm hours of operation for specific locations.

The van is scheduled to visit the following Atlantic County communities this month:

  • June 6   – Pleasantville City Hall
  • June 10 – John Brooks Recovery Center, Pleasantville
  • June 13 – Southern Jersey Family Medicine, Atlantic City
  • June 15 – St. Catherine Drexel Church, Egg Harbor Township
