LONGPORT – Local students graduating high school or currently enrolled in higher education who demonstrate scholastic achievement, civic leadership and a strong work ethic are eligible to apply for the Herb Stern Longport Scholarship.

This year, a record amount of $17,500 will be awarded, representing donations made in honor of the board president’s late wife, Faith Stern. It will be the largest amount ever awarded since the scholarship program’s inception 13 years ago. Last year, the scholarship program awarded $15,000 to seven Longport students studying teaching, law, medicine and computing.

The deadline to apply is April 15. Copies of the application and instructions are available at www.longportscholarshipfund.com. Hard copies are also available at the Longport Municipal Clerk’s Office at Longport Borough Hall, 2305 Atlantic Ave. Winners will be announced in May and publicly presented at the Longport Board of Commissioners meeting in June.

The Herb Stern Longport Scholarship Fund is supported by year-round and seasonal residents and homeowners who want to support students and their families by helping to pay the ever-higher costs of a college education, Stern said in a release.

Donations to honor a friend or loved one can be made at any time by credit card on the website or using PayPal. Checks can also be mailed to Treasurer Lynn Baumgardner, 3210 Atlantic Ave., Longport, NJ 08403.
