Dispose of latex gloves properly in a trash can.

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – As the community continues to deal with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Atlantic County Utilities Authority has seen an increase in improper flushing and littering items, such as disinfectant wipes, latex gloves and protective masks.

According to a press release, the ACUA wants to remind residents that the only item suitable to flush down the toilet is toilet paper.

Wipes, even those marked as “flushable” on the packaging, cause sewer buildups, damage to equipment and ultimately, costly repairs for local and regional sewer systems. These items can also wreak havoc on the pipes in your home.

ACUA employees have seen an increase in these items at its regional pump stations and in the bar screens at the Wastewater Treatment Facility in Atlantic City.

Another growing issue facing the community is litter.

Latex gloves, meant to protect against infections, are being left behind in parking lots and on roadways, further jeopardizing public health. Many people are also incorrectly placing these items into recycling bins. These items should be put in a trash can.

“We encourage all businesses that are continuing operations to please ensure trash cans are available to customers wearing gloves and other protective gear,” the release states.
