LONGPORT – Police charged a driver with driving while intoxicated after he crashed into a utility pole shortly before midnight Thursday, Aug. 20.

Longport Police Officers Alessandro Morelli and Dean Tibbitt  responded to the area of Ventnor and 30th avenues for the report of a motor vehicle crash.

According to witness statements, Cocozza’s vehicle was heading west on Ventnor Avenue when it failed to negotiate the bend in the roadway, struck an electric pole, splitting it in half, and went into a spin before stopping in the park at this location. Ventnor Avenue between 30th and 31st avenues was closed until Atlantic City Electric removed the downed electrical line found stretching across the roadway.

Cocozza was charged with driving while intoxicated and issued summons for failing to maintain lane, careless driving, reckless driving and possession of an open alcohol container in a motor vehicle.

No injuries were reported.
