LONGPORT – The Board of Commissioners Wednesday, April 21 approved resolutions setting beach openings and awarding a beach vending contract.
The commission awarded a license for SIMCO Logistics, trading as Jack & Jill DSS, to sell ice cream and ices on the beach during the 2021 season. SIMCO was the only bidder and agreed to pay $28,100 to the municipality for the exclusive right to sell refreshments on the beach this summer. The minimum bid was $25,000. Oil Depot NJ, LLC of Haddonfield, who was awarded the license for $22,800 in 2020 did not submit a bid this year, but will be selling ice cream on the beach in neighboring Margate.
The commissioners also approved a beach opening schedule, with certain beaches guarded 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. starting the weekend of June 4-5. Beaches at 16th, 26th, 30th and 33rd avenues will open on June 4; 19th and 31st avenues will open on June 5; 13th and 35th avenues open June 12; 21st and Pelham avenues open June 19; 25th Avenue opens June 25; and Evergreen Avenue, July 1. All openings are weather dependent and under the discretion of the chief of the Longport Beach Patrol.
The commissioners designated 12th, 22nd, 28th and 32nd avenues as surfing and surf riding beaches; and areas between 14th and 15th avenues, 22nd and 23rd avenues, 27th and 29th avenues, and 32nd and 33rd avenues as kayak launching areas.
In other beach related business, the borough awarded a contract to purchase a beach surf rake for beach maintenance at a cost of $48,459. The equipment will be purchased from H. Barber and Sons, Inc. through the HGACBuy cooperative purchasing agency.
Also, Solicitor Michael Affanato reported that the NJ Department of Environmental Protection is scheduled to approve the borough’s Beach Maintenance Plan by the end of April.
