MARGATE – A Margate man died Friday, Aug. 20 after being pulled from the ocean near the Margate Fishing Pier.
According to Margate City Fire Chief Dan Adams, numerous 911 calls reported that surfers pulled a fellow surfer, later identified as Edgar M. Osborne III, 67, of Margate, from the unguarded surfing beach at Exeter Avenue. He was unconscious and unresponsive. Beach Patrol was alerted by passers-by.
The Fire Department Rescue Team and Beach Patrol responded and started CPR using a defibrillator provided by the Ventnor City Beach Patrol’s dedicated EMTs. The defibrillator was applied once, but it failed to revive him, Adams said. CPR continued until paramedics from AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center arrived on scene.
Osborne was transported to AtlantiCare’s City Division where he later died.
Adams said Osborne had a small laceration on his head but the cause of the wound was unknown. Officials do not know what caused Osborne to lose consciousness while he was in the water. An autopsy was performed but the results are unknown at this time.
Adams said he knew of Osborne, who surfed in the area since he was in his teens.
Osborne grew up in Margate, attended Atlantic City High School and earned his private pilot license from Emory Aviation in Colorado. He was a private pilot who enjoyed surfing, skateboarding, bicycle riding and traveling.
Osborne is survived by the mother of his children, Donna Siracusa, his son Edgar Osborne, 4, his fiancee Melissa Candell, his daughters Danielle Osborne and Nicole Campbell, son in law Gary Campbell, and three grandchildren.
